Our Story
The Hale Empowerment & Revitalization Organization (HERO) is a 501(c)(3) corporation located
in Greensboro, Alabama that was formed to works as a catalyst for community development to end
rural poverty in the Alabama Black Belt. As a non-profit, HERO provides economic development,
community resources, housing education, and affordable housing construction. HERO has carried on
this mission since 1994 through many successful grant programs dedicating to improving the quality of
life in the Alabama Black Belt, especially for at-risk youth ages 16-24 by providing cultural, education and
occupational skill development.
In the beginning, community leaders with the help of the University of Alabama’s Provost Office
obtained a grant to form HERO with the goal of bringing people and resources together to address
general community and rural poverty needs. Under the guidance of several outstanding leaders and
community partners, the organization helped to revitalize downtown Greensboro and other rural areas
with building renovations and new builds, along with providing a wide variety of community workforce
programs and projects.
Our Mission
HERO works as a catalyst for community development in areas of the Alabama Black Belt to end rural poverty. As a non-profit housing resource center, HERO provides community resources, housing
education and youth programming.
